Google+ trends: Roger Federer, Apple boycott

On Tuesday, August 28, Google+ users are buzzing about Roger Federer, who is currently competing in the US Open, and threatening to boycott Apple as the Apple vs. Samsung fallout builds momentum after Apple's legal victory on Friday.?

On Friday, Samsung was found guilty by a California jury of patent infringement against Apple and the manufacturer was ordered to pay one billion US dollars in damages. The ruling could have a massive fallout effect not just on Samsung and Apple, who are fighting numerous other patent infringements around the world, but also other smartphone manufacturers who may now feel they have to radically alter their design in order to avoid a legal conflict with Apple.

As a result Google + users are trending "#BoycottApple" out of concern for what the ruling could mean for smartphone design; though it should be noted that Samsung is one of the largest manufacturers making handsets that run on Google's Android OS, which could mean that users of Google's own social network may have a strong Android / Samsung bias.

Also causing a buzz on Google+ Tuesday is tennis player, and world number one, Roger Federer who cruised to victory on the first day of the US Open Monday beating American Donald Young 6-3, 6-2,6-4.

The top 5 most talked about topics on Google+ on August 28 at 9:30 AM GMT are:

Lubricated nanoparticles penetrate the brain

Nanoparticles often meet a sticky end in the brain. In theory, the tiny structures could deliver therapeutic drugs to a brain tumour, but navigating the narrow, syrupy spaces between brain cells is difficult. A spot of lubrication could help.

Justin Hanes at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, was surprised to discover just how impermeable brain tissue is to nanoparticles. "It's very sticky stuff," he says, similar in adhesiveness to mucus, which protects parts of the body ? such as the respiratory system ? by trapping foreign particles.

It was thought that the adhesiveness of brain tissue limited the size of particles that can smoothly spread through the brain. Signalling molecules, nutrients and waste products below 64 nanometres in diameter can pass through the tissue with relative ease, but larger nanoparticles ? suitable for delivering a payload of drugs to a specific location in the brain ? quickly get stuck.

Now Hanes and his colleagues have doubled that size limit. They coated their nanoparticles with a densely-packed polymer shield, which lubricates their surface by preventing electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with the surrounding tissue. "A nice hydrated shell around the particle prevents it from adhering to cells," says Hanes.

Tracking the particles

Using this approach, they were able to observe the diffusion of nanoparticles 114 nanometres in diameter through live mouse brains and dissected human and rat brain tissue. Hanes believes the true upper size limit now lies somewhere between 114 nm and 200 nm. "Things were starting to slow down at 114," he says.

But further research is needed before the team can progress to clinical trials in humans. "At this scale, it is very important to understand where our nanoparticles go once injected into the body," says team member Elizabeth Nance, also of Johns Hopkins University. "We will need to show that, when combined with a therapeutic agent, these particles are getting to our site of interest, are having the intended effect and are not causing any side effects or toxicity to healthy normal tissue."

"The effect of this work should be long-term," says Paul Wilson at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK. The result represents significant progress in the battle to administer drugs within the brain, he says. "More effective and longer-lasting treatments against brain diseases, such as tumours and strokes, will no doubt soon follow."

Sleep learning is possible: Associations formed when asleep remained intact when awake

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing August 26 in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone -- even when no odor is present -- both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv -- Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed -- namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas -- including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning -- even for a moment -- disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor -- either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present -- by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone -- with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones -- those associated with bad smells -- provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" -- which makes us forget most of our dreams -- may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie -- what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

NASA to launch mini lab, test for cancer and disease in space

DNP Microflow

It's hard to find a good specialist on earth, let alone when you're floating 240 miles above it. That's why NASA will test the Microflow, a breadbox-sized device that instantly detects cancer and infectious diseases, and can even sense the presence of rotten food. The Canadian-made device is a "flow cytometer," which works by analyzing microparticles in blood or other fluids and replaces hospital versions weighing hundreds of pounds. Here on Earth, the device could let people in remote communities be tested more quickly for disease, or permit on-site testing of food quality, for instance. It will be particularly advantageous in space, however, where Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield will test it during his six-month ISS mission, allowing crew to monitor, diagnose and treat themselves without outside help. Now, if we could just get it down to a hand size, and use some kind of radio waves instead -- oh wait, that's not until Stardate -105352.

"Hell" is how one cancer patient describes it ? the helpless feeling of sitting in a hospital room all alone, a potion that is both toxic and lifesaving flowing into her body.

When she didn't know whether she would live or die, when she didn't know if she could possibly endure another round of the horrifying chemo treatments at St. Luke's in New York, there was someone who helped her endure.

Lance Armstrong.

No, not Lance the fallen two-wheeled star whose reputation and cycling legacy is in tatters. The other Lance, the philanthropist and cancer survivor who has inspired so many.

"I know firsthand how much good he's done," said the woman, whose cancer is now in remission but asked that her name not be used because she's a public figure and isn't ready to let the world know about her condition. "He's touched too many lives to stop now. He's given hope to too many people."

Armstrong made cycling cool in America with seven straight Tour de France titles. He will likely be stripped of them all because of what he put in his body.

That Lance is done, gone forever.

We hope the other Lance continues to serve. So many still need him.

"I think saving millions of lives ? and I'm not exaggerating by any means ? far outweighs any athletic accomplishment," said Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau, who, like Armstrong, survived testicular cancer.

This is the dichotomy we're faced with after Armstrong decided not to dispute the charges leveled against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. He still refuses to acknowledge using any performance-enhancing drugs, but that's essentially what he did when he decided not to carry on the fight. His reasoning ? that he was simply tired of contesting accusations that first came up more than a decade ago ? rings hollow, to say the least.

After all, he had stared down cancer when told he had less than a 50-50 chance of living. He had turned the towering Pyrenees into tame little hills during all those glorious Tour de France triumphs, refusing to be beaten no matter the physical toll on his body.

To give up now? Well, USADA must've had quite an impressive case against him.

It's time to let go of that Lance ? the disgraced doper, like so many in his sport, not to mention one who can be sullen and snarky ? and embrace the other side of the man.

The charismatic figure who started a foundation that raised a half a billion dollars, and counting, for the fight against cancer. The caring person who shows up at hospitals unannounced, without an entourage, giving so many victims of this dreaded disease a reason to live. Maybe he does it with a few words. Maybe it's just sitting with them while they're undergoing treatments.

All of it helps tremendously.

"Livestrong has almost made cancer acceptable," said Shanteau, who started working with Armstrong's foundation after he underwent successful surgery. "That's such a dangerous word ? to 'accept' ? but people are willing to talk about it now. People are willing to address it. People are willing to support it. Livestrong has done that. Lance should be proud that his organization, in a sense, has outgrown him."

Shanteau is all for clean sport, but he felt no reservations about joining up with Livestrong after learning he had testicular cancer just ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He never had any trouble separating the shady athlete from the man who has done so much good away from his bike.

This other fight is far more important than the one he's been waging with USADA.

"When a person goes to Livestrong or any other cancer foundation, the last thing on his mind is that," Shanteau said. "They're walking in there fighting for their lives. They need help. The foundation is going to continue to be there to help."

Shanteau has seen both sides of the fight. He beat cancer. His father didn't.

"I still got to see all the benefits from the foundation that he got, and the pride he got from seeing me work with the foundation," Shanteau said. "I've seen how Livestrong affects people the cancer community and what a positive force they have been in that fight."

There are hopeful signs in the wake of Armstrong's bombshell capitulation. He tweeted Friday that donations to Livestrong were 25 times higher than the previous day, when he raised the white flag.

"Thank you thank you thank you!" he wrote.

Around the country, people donned their Livestrong bracelets, showing solidarity with Armstrong the cancer fighter, if not Armstrong the supposed doper.

The American Cancer Society is sticking with him, too.

"It is our hope that the foundation will continue its important work," said John R. Seffrin, the organization's CEO. "Reducing suffering and death from cancer is a moral imperative, and the Lance Armstrong foundation's contribution is sorely needed."

So, if you're wearing a Livestrong bracelet today, that doesn't mean you're supporting athletes shooting themselves up with all sorts of illicit chemicals, looking to boost their strength or improve their endurance.

Even Armstrong's most ardent supporters seem at ease conceding that, yes, he probably juiced.

Larry DeGaris, director of the sports marketing program at the University of Indianapolis, said he doesn't expect the USADA case to have a major impact on Armstrong's fundraising abilities.

"His celebrity has superseded his sports accomplishments and is now more based on being a cancer survivor than a Tour de France winner," DeGaris said. "I reckon there's something uniquely American going on with athletes who transcend their sports and for whom performance on the field of play becomes secondary."

For once, that's a good thing.

We no longer care if Armstrong injected himself with something that helped him win the Tour de France over and over again.

Now, it's about finding a chemical we can inject into anyone stricken with cancer, to kill off that insidious disease before it takes another loved one, another close friend, another person we admired from afar.

We need all the help we can get in that battle.

We need Lance.

Verizon Passed on the Galaxy Note, but Is Interested in LG Intuition

LG Intuition Verizon may have passed on the Samsung Galaxy Note, but that doesn't mean that it is disinterested in tabletphones. According to an LG press release, consumers can expect the LG Optimus Vu sometime this quarter.

Furthermore, according to DroidLife, the device will be receiving a name change to the LG Intuition when announced by?Big Red?in the coming weeks. When available, consumers will supposedly be able to pick up the new tabletphone for $200 on a new 2-year contract, or $550 at full price.

With its large 5-inch display, this will be the first tabletphone?from Verizon?as?it opted not to offer the slightly larger one from?Samsung. After the release of the LG Intuition, HTC is expected to?come out with?the next mega-phone, though it is rumored to sport an impressive 1080p display, which the Intuition does not offer.

More Hardware Details:

The LG Intuition will sport a 5-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1024 x 768 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It will launch running on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will be offered. According to LG, it will?offer a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage capacity.

Grow Your Business with Benefits Administration Outsourcing ...

Outsourcing is one of the tools that businesses, racing to get ahead in terms of competitiveness, use these days. ?It is a cost-effective strategy for any company wishing to capitalize more on their edge and their core competencies. At the same time, leaving the non-core jobs to those who have the expertise ensures that they are efficiently carried out. This division of labor leads to a more synergic progression of the entire business operation.

Just like customer service, benefits administration outsourcing is one of the types of business processes that are outsourced to external entities. At the core of benefits administration outsourcing is to provide highly-efficient solutions to both clients and their employees. The services are driven by outcomes ? lower management costs and risks for clients and greater satisfaction for the employees.

Components of Benefits Administration Outsourcing

In simple language, benefits administration outsourcing refers to the process wherein a company contracts out the administration of various benefitsof its employees, like health and welfare benefits, to another company.

The suite of services provided in benefits administration outsourcing includes online benefits enrolment, premium billing administration, employee support, new hire enrolment services, wellness tools, real-time administrator reporting, and decision support tools, among others. ?Recordkeeping and reconciliation, and benefit accounting also fall under administration outsourcing.

In most cases, these processes are handled by providers through the use of sophisticated administration software. This expedites and harmonizes the complex processes in benefits administration thereby arriving at efficient delivery of services.

ItsRole in Promoting Business Growth

Along with thecompany?s push for growth, administration costs also grow. Moreover, the burden itself of directly managing employee benefits grows. The right strategy is, therefore, to outsource the administration work to leading providers in the market so the company can focus on enhancing its competitiveness. There are several ways how administration outsourcing can contribute to business growth.

Basically, the prime reason why businesses go for outsourcing in the first place is to lower costs. In fact, companies can save as much as 60 percent in costs if they outsource jobs to countries like India. If they do this, a significant part of the capital is freed, and the savings can be expended to other business processes like expansion of operations or intensification of research and development which can lead to growth.

In outsourcing, companies can focus their resources on the core competencies and leave the non-core ones to those who have the competency to do them. This can doubly impact productivity positively. The obvious one being that focusing on the company?s competitive edge give the company the chance to grow and specialize on what they do best further. ?Likewise, if outsourcing deliverables are done most efficiently, employees? benefits are better taken care of. This boosts employee satisfaction that can be translated to improved productivity on the part of the personnel and the business eventually.

The competition faced by businesses in this day and age of highly globalized market forces them to innovate and explore all means to step-up and stay ahead. Benefits administration outsourcing is one of these means. It has become the norm and not a choice because its benefits are just too appealing to ignore.

First skin cancer found in wild fish Mutiny Radio

August 6, 2012

Via NewScientist

THE local fishermen call them the Rambo fish: their scarred, blackened skin makes them look as if they have survived wars. In fact, these are the first wild fish known to have skin cancer.

The diseased coral trout, living on Australia?s Great Barrier Reef, were brought to the attention of Michael Sweet at the University of Newcastle in the UK last year. Sweet and his colleagues ruled out fungal disease and say that the black scars, which look like human melanomas, are in fact the symptoms of skin cancer.

The fish live in pristine waters so the most likely cause is the ozone hole, which increases radiation in this region and could explain the high prevalence of disease: 15 per cent of sampled fish had cancerous lesions (PLoS One, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0041989).

Other wild animals known to get cancer include the Tasmanian devil and beluga whales.
